Councillor governance training
Online induction training modules are available to provide new and re-elected mayors and councillors with information about accountability, decision-making and other matters. This training will help ensure councillors and others in local government are well prepared to deliver on the needs of our communities.

Candidate election training
Changes to the Local Government Electoral Act 2011 2011 in 2019 introduced that candidates must complete mandatory So you want to be a councillor? election training no more than six months before nominating for any election or by-election, even if you have completed the training before.

Candidate training background information
Candidates were advised about the requirement to complete the training through the department’s website, the ECQ website, radio and newspaper advertising, media, social media posters, email reminders to councillors and local government stakeholders, and information sharing through local councils and other local government stakeholders.
The training was offered from 30 October 2019 to 3 March 2020. During this period, 2235 people completed the training, including 100 per cent of the 1554 candidates who nominated for the election.
The training for the 2020 elections was primarily delivered through an interactive online course. If you are interested in seeing what the training covered, you can download PDF versions of the training:
